The latest in our monthly series about events in Malaga gives you all the information about what’s on in Malaga in June. June is busy, with the usual round-up of great music, dance, art and markets plus festivals and lots of activities for families. Read our choice of events in Malaga in June.

Corpus Christi in Malaga

Celebrations for this key event in the Christian calendar start on Thursday 4 June in the Pedregalejo district and continue in the city until Sunday 7 June. Over the weekend, some 13 altars will be set up between Plaza de la Constitución and Plaza Spinola, and along Calle Larios and Calle Molina Lario.

Mass and processions

Several districts have Corpus Christi events, but we’ve highlighted those below as the easiest to enjoy if you’re based in the city centre.

Thursday 4 June in Pedregalejo

Holy mass at 7pm in the Sanctissimum Corpus Christi church in Pedregalejo, with the Corpus Christi Polyphonic Choir. The procession leaves the church at 8pm and parades around the neighbourhood with the following route: Calle Ventura de la Vega, Calle Corpus Christi, Calle Juan Valera, Calle Juan Sebastián Elcano, Calle César Riario, Calle Bolivia, Calle Boquerón, Calle Pepote, Calle Practicante Pedro Román, Calle Juan Sebastián Elcano, Calle Ventura de la Vega and back to the church

Sunday 7 June in the city centre

Holy mass in the Cathedral , with the Cathedral choir and organ accompanying.

Corpus Christi procession – leaving the Cathedral at 7.30pm and taking the following route: Patio de los Naranjos, Calle Santa María, Calle Sánchez Pastor, Plaza del Cardenal Spínola, Calle Granada, Plaza de la Constitución, Calle Larios, Calle Strachan and Calle Molina Lario. befpre returning to the Cathedral.This procession includes Our Lady of the Kings, patron of Malaga Cathedral.

Malaga Guitar Festival – maestros in action

The second edition runs from 3 to 12 June, with a full programme of concerts and masterclasses, plus a competition. The concerts features musicians at the top of their game (including last year’s first and second prize winners) and take place in lovely locations. The main patio at the Alcazaba and the Maria Cristina Theatre are two of them.

Terral Festival – great music

International music and song comes to Malaga for another edition of this annual festival, which never fails to offer something for everyone. This year, concerts run from 6 to 28 June and include flamenco, pop, Spanish singer songwriters and the New York band, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Polo Pride – digital diversity

Malaga’s digital hub celebrates tech, digital cultural, creativity and diversity on Friday 12 June in La Tabacalera (on the western seafront, next to the Car Museum). Details of the programme and how to get tickets here (in Spanish only)

Pride celebrations in Malaga

🏳‍🌈 Join Malaga’s LGTBIQ+ community and celebrate International Pride Day between 22 and 27 June. Events include:

Films at the Albeniz Cinema (Calle Alcazabilla) at 7pm on 22 (Pride), 23 (20.000 especies de abejas), 24 (Carol) and 25 (Queer) June. Free entry – tickets available from 17 June at 11am from the Cervantes Theatre and Albeniz Cinema (and online via Uniticket).

Poous, performance art, in Calle San Juan de Letrán on Friday 26 June.

March and concert on Saturday 27 June. The march leaves Plaza de la Constitución at 7pm and makes its way to Plaza de la Merced. At 8pm, emcee Alice Wonderland leads the party, with drag queens, DJs sessions and various artistes. 🏳‍🌈

International Knitting in Public Day

The Picasso Museum opens its doors to anyone with crochet and/or knitting needles on Saturday 13 June from 10am to 2pm. The event – in the lovely gardens – celebrates textiles in conjunction with the Joana Vasconcelos exhibition (see below) and is an open invitation to sharing artisan creativity. Free entry to the museum, but you need to sign up first via the email educacion@mpicassom.org

Outdoor cinema at the Picasso Museum

The lovely patio hosts one film this month, themed around the Joana Vasconcellos temporary exhibition:

• Friday 26 June – The Band’s All Here (Busby Berkeley, 1943 – in English with Spanish subtitles)

Tickets cost €10 and include a visit to the exhibition beforehand the film starts (10pm) and a drink from the café. More information and link to buy tickets here.

Cirkorama – for all those young at heart

Malaga celebrates the art of circus acts with 10 days of free events at the Maria Victoria Atencia Cultural Centre on Calle Ollerías (read more about this area of Malaga).

Events celebrating clowns, dance, theatre and music start on 18 June and continues until 28 June.

Free entry but you need a ticket available online (more information here). Note that tickets are available from 10am a few days before each event.

Puppet festival – perfect for kids

The Eduardo Ocón Auditorium in the Paseo del Parque is the main stage for this festival from 25 to 28 June. The puppet shows are suitable for children from 3 upwards and all performances are free and start at noon.

• Saturday 27 June – Peneque and the Lost Music Score
• Sunday 28 June – Pepin and the Ghost

Note too that the shows are in Spanish, but puppets are universal, so it should be relatively easy to follow.

Noche de San Juan – Malaga welcomes summer

Malaga celebrates the arrival of summer with a night of partying on the beach on the eve of San Juan, Tuesday 23 June. For more information, read our guide to San Juan in Malaga.

Tardeo Summer – live music in the Port

The second edition of this event – live music, entertainment and DJ sets – is on Saturday 27 June from 7pm on the Muelle de Levante quay in Malaga Port.

Confirmed artists include Free Soul Band (one of our favs), Comando G and Play, with more to come. Tickets cost €25 and include a soft drink or beer – get yours here.

Learn to make paella

Join chef Laura (Le Cordon Bleu trained) at the Elbasi Taller de Cocina cooking school in the Soho district on a 3-hour cooking course during which you learn how to cook two local dishes and a real paella. Tickets cost €66.50 per person and include two drinks and a surprise dessert.

A family day out at La Térmica

This cultural centre celebrates another Ancá La Térmica on Saturday 6 June, with a full day of traditional games, workshops, live music and food trucks. Suitable for children of all ages – our friends with young kids recommend it – and a great way to spend a Saturday. La Térmica gardens have shade too, so no need to worry about it being too hot.

A garden of (lovely) fantasy ceramics

Delicious Gardinum is a small but exquisite exhibition showcasing Rafael Chacón’s extraordinary ceramics. Hailing from Seville, Chacón creates a fantasy garden, packed with strange creatures, bright colours and shapes, in a dimly-lit space, with a sound track of bird song.

Unfortunately, there are no labels on the works and the downloadable pdf via a QR code is in Spanish only, but we still think it’s worth popping in to see.

Find it at Malaga University Headquarters on the Paseo del Parque (next to the Bank of Spain and behind the Museum of Malaga). Open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and 5 to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 2pm. Free entry. Until 20 June.

While you’re there, pop down into the basement to see the sections of Phoenician, Roman and medieval walls.

Wine tastings in June

Araboka Plaza starts its wine tasting season in June with a Perrier Jouet pairing menu on Wednesday 10 June at 8.30pm: aperitivo, four courses plus dessert, all paired with bubbly-

Fab flamenco in Malaga in June

There are several flamenco events in Malaga this month. They include:

Jerez Land of Flamenco

Singers, musicians and a dancer come together for an evening of celebrating Jerez’s deeply rooted flamenco traditionas on Monday 22 June at 8pm at the Cervantes Theatre. More info and link to book tickets here.

Deep Roads to Flamenco

The third edition of this annual festival, Hondos Caminos del Flamenco, takes place on three dates in June – Thursday 11, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 – in the lovely setting of the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares (Plaza Enrique Herrero in the old quarter). All feature singers and musicians from the local flamenco scene. More information and links to buy tickets here.

Rocío Márquez

The young and one of the most promising contemporary flamenco singers perform at the Cervantes Theatre on Thursday 25 June at 8pm. More info and link to book tickets here.

12th International Flamenco Festival

This annual event just sneaks into June this year, with events from 29 June to 5 July. Its central theme celebrates women in flamenco and local female talents give the master classes (mostly for professionals) this year. For the general public, there are several free concerts. The Flamenco Festival post has all the details.

Flamenco concert 

Aula Municipal de Flamenco in Malaga has its next concert of the season Monday 29 June at 7.30pm in the Centro MVA on Calle Ollerías in the old quarter. The Cuadro Carmen González dance group will perform. Tickets are free, but you need to get yours from the Municipal Fiestas Department in Camino de San Rafael 99 (available from 9am to 2pm – you can get here on the No 20 bus from the Alameda Principal) or from the MVA box office on the day from 7pm onwards. 

Great music in Malaga in June

As usual, there’s an eclectic choice, including some free concerts (scroll down for those).

Picnic concert at the English Cemetery

From Carmen to Piaf, Tango and more, in the grounds of the English Cemetery, Avda de Pries 1, with Stella Grigorian and Damian Whiteley on Saturday 6 June at 8pm.  Tickets cost €25 – more information and link to book here.

City of Malaga International Piano Competition

The second edition of this festival runs from 19 to 27 June, with the first rounds in the (lovely) Maria Cristina concert hall and the final in the Cervantes Theatre. Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany the finalists opting for the €20,000 and concert-tour prize.

The 24 contestants are from all over the world and presidents of the jury are brothers Victor and Luis del Valle, known as Dúo del Valle and from nearby Vélez-Málaga. They also play at the inaugural concert. More information and links to buy tickets here.

Free concerts  in Malaga in June

If you like great music free, these concerts are for you.

Museum of Malaga

The lovely patio at this museum has the usual free concert this month. Get there early (say 11am) to be sure of a seat.

The excellent Maestro Iribarren Chamber Orchestra plays a Baroque programme on Sunday 14 June at noon.

Terral en tu Zona

In conjunction the Terral Festival, Malaga celebrates it with several free concerts around the city during June. All concerts are at 8.30pm and seating is provided.

• Saturday 13 June – Jose Carrá Trio, Parque Virginia in El Palo (Google map link). Get here on the No 8 or 11 bus from the Alameda Principal.
• Friday 19 June – Chanwei, Auditorio Eduardo Ocón in the Paseo del Parque.
• Sunday 21 June – Las Capullitas de Aleli, Parque de la Alegría, Ciudad Jardin. Google map link here.
• Thursday 25 June – Super Heavy Sound, Huelin Park. Google map link here. It’s about 20 minutes walk from the city centre.

Municipal Band Concerts

This excellent band has the following free concerts in June, all at 8pm:

• Saturday 6 June – music for the Eve of Corpus Christi
• Sunday 14 June – the band plays opera and Zarzuela (Spanish operetta) tunes
• Sunday 28 June – an evening of symphonic music

All take place in the Patio de las Cadenas, at the main Cathedral entrance on Calle Císter. Seating is provided but as usual, it’s first-come-first served so be there in plenty of time.

Baroque-themed concert

In tune with the excellent The Journey to Light: from Guido Remi to Murillo exhibition at Bishop’s Palace this month, the Malaga Baroque Orchestra plays Telemann, Vivaldi and Bach on Thursday 25 June at 7.30pm. Free entry but get there early to be sure of a place.

Unusual visits to the Botanics

The lovely Botanical gardens have the following activities this month:

Family fun from 11am to 2pm, with workshops, puppets and interactive games. €9 for adults and €6.90 for children up to 16. Sunday 14 and Sunday 28 June

Note that the activity is in Spanish, but we imagine the imagination and fun will go a long way to understanding what’s going on.

For adults – the gardens and palace by night

Discover the botanical gardens by night, its characters and history on a dramatised tour taking place on Friday 26 June at 9pm. The cost per person is €17.

Amazing art exhibitions

As usual, Malaga is showcasing some excellent art this month, with several great new exhibitions. Here’s our pick of the best.

Bishop’s Palace

The Journey to Light: from Guido Remi to Murillo showcases Spanish and European paintings from the 16^th to 18^th centuries, when the use of light became an essential part of artistic expression.

Over 80 paintings depict portraits, religious and mythological figures, still life and landscapes by key artists at the time. Signatures on the canvases include Martin de Vos, Luca Giordano, José de Ribera and Claudio Coello, as well as Remi and Murillo. There’s also a Last Supper from the Tintoretto School.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm and 4 to 7pm, and Sunday 10am to 2pm. €3 (this fee goes to two local charities for the homeless).

Picasso Museum

Note on tickets

The Picasso Museum is the most-visited in southern Spain and an extremely popular attraction. As a result, sometimes no walk-in tickets are available, only those booked ahead online.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend buying your ticket in advance. You can do so via the museum’s website or through GetYourGuide (no difference in price for you, just a small commission to us through the affiliate program – gracias!).

The most-visited museum in southern Spain has a permanent collection, called Picasso: Structures of Invention. The exhibition shows the 20th century’s greatest artist’s creative process through 150 works. You can also see 22 works from his La Californie sketchbook, which he drew in Cannes in 1956.

Joana Vasconcelos Transfiguration

A new temporary exhibition showcases the work of this contemporary Portuguese artist from the early 90s to today. Vasconcelos’ sculptures and installations examine the relationship between Portuguese traditions and contemporary art, using tiles, textiles and ceramics. The result is an extraordinary collection, guaranteed not to leave you indifferent!

Open daily 11am to 7pm. Tickets €12, free Sundays after 5pm. While you’re there, do visit the Picasso Museum café with its lovely patio.

Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País

This lovely historic building on the corner of Plaza de la Constitución welcomes a new exhibition in June – to be confirmed.

Free entry and open Monday to Friday 11am to 2pm and 6 to 9pm, Saturday 11am to 2pm. Until 26 June.

Russian Museum

The Russian Museum and MEET (Malaga Espacio Expositivo Tabacalera) has several exhibitions, many of which comes from private collections of art and some have a Russian theme.

Time for Looking (1970-2000)

One of Spain’s most prominent photojournalists, Marisa Flórez, has a retrospective of her award-winning photography. The large photos, mostly black and white, and portraits, illustrate Spanish history, politics, daily life and celebrities from the last 30 years of the 20th century.

Art from the Spanish Golden Age

Some 80 works from Alejandro Sanz Peinado’s private collection are on display. They showcase 16th and 17th masterpieces, with the emphasis on Dutch paintings and Italian works. Signatures on the canvases include Rubens, Tenier, van Dyck, Velázquez and Zubarán. Until 30 September.

Open Tuesday to Sunday 9.30am to 8pm. €8. Free on Sundays after 5pm.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

The museum continues to showcase Spanish art from the 18th and 19th centuries seen in the permanent collection.

Archipielago

Taking Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne as its inspiration, this exhibition showcases the depiction of cartography in some of the most influential 20th-century artists. Signatures include Picasso, Miró, Warhol, Braque, Arp and Zush. See it until 6 September.

Tickets cost €12. Free entry on Sundays after 4pm. Note that if you’re resident in Malaga province (you need to show proof), the entry fee is €8.

Roman remains

The extraordinary remains of a residential and commercial complex underneath the museum are now open. If you like a good dose of history and/or an insight into Malaga’s rich heritage, we highly recommend including a visit.

You can book your ticket in advance – €15 including the museum and remains (€10 if you’re resident in Malaga province) – or join one of the hourly visits when you’re there.

Pompidou Centre

The latest exhibition, To Open Eyes, looks at how artists view their surroundings and interact with those looking at their art. The six sections include a wide range of installations, paintings, sculptures and videos. And as usual, they all provide plenty of food for thought.

Gesture & Matter – International Abstractions (1945-1965)

This must-see exhibition showcases the new artistic movement that emerged in Paris after the Second World War. It explored new ways of depicting art and techniques on canvas, and the exhibition brings together an impressive selection of artists and their paintings. Until 7 September.

Open Wednesday to Monday 9.30am to 8pm. €7 for the permanent exhibition, €9 for both. Free Sundays after 4pm. 

Picasso Foundation

Picasso’s birthplace has an interesting temporary exhibition on this month: Neither Muses nor Models: Female Artists in the Casa Natal Picasso Collection. It includes works by local, Spanish and international artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, María Helena Vieira da Silva, Alice Baber and Elena Laverón. Until 13 September.

Open daily 9.30am to 8pm. €3 (€4 combined ticket to visit the house).

La Térmica Cultural Centre

Murmuration

US artist Ryan Schneider has spent two months in residence at the centre and this exhibition is the result. Giant sculptures in wood, bronze, stone and gold make up the pieces, all inspired by the ecosystem in Ryan’s home in the Mojave Desert.

We’ve watched him at work with giant tree trunks and a chainsaw via La Térmica’s Instagram stories and can’t wait to see the result.

From 4 June to 13 September. Free entry. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and 4 to 8.30pm, weekends 10am to 2pm. 

Get to La Térmica by walking west along the western seafront (the cultural centre is behind the modern glass Diputación building) or on the No 7 bus from the Alameda Principal (south side).

Markets in Malaga in June

Arts and crafts on the Port

The Sunday El Zoco market takes place on Sundays in June on Muelle Uno from 11am to 7pm on 7 June, and from noon to 8pm on 14, 21 and 28 June.

Red Friday

The summer edition of the market/ live music/ performance event takes place on Friday 5 June at La Térmica Cultural Centre from 6pm to midnight. You can read the full list of artists here.

Merced Market

Plaza de la Merced hosts an arts and crafts market from 11am to 7pm on Sunday 7 and Sunday 21 June. Visit the stalls and enjoy the last blooms on the jacaranda trees!

Mercado Soho

Calle Tomás Heredia is the location for this arts and crafts market on Sunday 14 and Sunday 28 June from 11am to 7pm.

Organic Markets

The best summer fruit (think apricots, watermelon, peaches…) and vegetables are now in season and these markets sell them plus products, all grown and produced locally in the Guadalhorce River valley. Saturday 14 June on Calle Cervantes and Paseo de Reding (near La Malagueta) and Saturday 28 June in Huelin Park. 10am to 2pm.

Sports events in Malaga in June

Malaga Sailing Cup

The annual regatta takes place from 12 to 14 June this year. You can watch the competitions every day from noon in Malaga Bay – the promenade going from the lighthouse to the cruise terminal is one of the best spots to see the yachts. More details here.

Sacaba Summer Games

If crossfit is your sport and you have a partner, this is your event. Taking place over the weekend 6 and 7 June at the far west end of La Misericordia beach, the event has competitions for all fitness and strength levels. More information here.

City of Malaga International Athletics Meet

Thursday 18 June brings elite athletics to the city, competing in all the usual track and field events as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – Challenger.

Watch the action from 6pm onwards at the Athletics Stadium in the far west for the city. More information here.

How to get to the Athletics Stadium

Get there on:

The metro – take L1 at Atarazanas station on the Alameda Principal, swap platforms at the next stop, Guadalmedina, to get on L2 and get off at the last stop, Palacio de los Deportes. Allow around 15-20 minutes.

The No 7 bus from the south side of the Alameda Principal, get off at the last stop. Allow 30-40 minutes for the journey.

Charity Fun Run

Ponle Freno – the Malaga edition of this national event in aid of traffic accident victims takes place on Saturday 6 June in the evening. 5k and 10k races for adults and shorter events for children. Sign-up costs €10 for adults and is free for children. More details here.
