A is for amazing, autumn and art in Malaga

True to its reputation as one of the southern Europe’s top art destinations, yet again Malaga has some amazing autumn art on the agenda. On the scene in the city this autumn are artists who are fascinated by primitive painting or are influenced by Picasso. A master of engraving also makes an appearance along with paintings and sculptures by his contemporaries. Whether sketches, watercolours, installations or sculptures are your thing, be prepared for some amazing art in Malaga this autumn.

Picasso Museum

The Picasso Museum has two exhibitions that you can catch if you’re in Malaga in the early autumn:

Genius Loci

This temporary exhibition showcases the work of one of the biggest figures on the contemporary art scene, Farah Atassi. A couple of her Picasso-inspired pictures featured at the museum in 2024 and this year, she gets her own show. Until 14 December.

Memory and Desire

The museum welcomes another major exhibition this year when it explores how Picasso saw the passing of time and history, and applied his interpretation to his work. This collection takes Study with Plaster Head (Picasso painted it in 1925) as its springboard and juxtapositions his work with other significant 20th century artists.

The exhibition showcases the work of numerous artists, all influenced by some aspect of Picasso’s creativity. The specially curated collection includes paintings, sculptures and installations, carrying the signatures of talents such as Léger, Cocteau, Magritte and Man Ray.

This museum has two excellent art exhibitions this autumn in Malaga:

Going back to our roots

Next up on the autumn art in Malaga menu is an exhibition exploring the obsession with geology and cave paintings in 20th-century Spanish art. It comes into its own at the Carmen Thyssen Museum with an exhibition called Telluric and Primitive. It shows numerous works by Spanish artists and their take on primitive art and essential earthy elements.

The artists on display include all the biggest names in Spain in the last century, such as Barceló, Chillida, Miró, Picasso, Saura and Tapìes.

A master of engraving

Most of us know Rembrandt for his paintings, but the Dutch artist was also a master engraver and better known for this technique than his paintings among his contemporaries. A new exhibition at the Carmen Thyssen showcases 35 of his masterpiece engravings, based around two themes – portraits (including self portraits) and religious themes.

23 October 2025 to 18 January 2026.

Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 8pm. Tickets cost €12. Free entry on Sundays after 4pm. Note that if you’re resident in Malaga (you need to show proof), the entry fee is €8.)

Bishop’s Palace

This lovely space opposite the Cathedral has the exhibition, Casa de Alba Patronage and Collecting (Mecenazgo y coleccionismo en la Casa de Alba), which showcases 250 pieces (paintings, sculptures, decorative art and documents) from the house of Alba.

The collection, from the Alba’s three palaces in Spain, is one of the largest and most significant in Europe. Top treasures include a portrait by Goya, drawings by Rembrandt, letters from Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, and works by Gainsborough and Reynolds.

You can also see the Alba family tree, with roots in the British royal family and Portuguese nobility.

Pompidou Centre

We’re waiting for confirmation of the autumn temporary exhibition at this museum. While we’re waiting, do check out the latest permanent exhibition at the Pompidou Centre (renewed in summer 2025).

Open Wednesday to Monday 9.30am to 8pm. €7 for the permanent exhibition, €9 for both. Free Sundays after 4pm.
