Spain has many traditional foodie treats at Christmas, many of which make perfect gifts to take home as a Christmas present. Most of them fit easily into your hand luggage. Why add the following deliciousness to a Christmas and New Year dinner table this year?
Turrón
Turrón is a traditional sweetmeat eaten in Spain at Christmas and made of almonds, sugar and honey. It comes in lots of different types, although the best-selling (and best-known) are turrón de Jijona (made with ground almonds so it’s soft) and turrón de Alicante (made with whole almonds so it’s hard).
One of the most traditional places to buy this is Casa Mira (they’ve been making it here since 1842 so they’ve had plenty of time to perfect the recipe). They also sell a good selection of other Christmas sweetmeats, all delicious. The perfect Malaga Christmas food gift!
Where to buy it: Casa Mira, Calle Larios 5 (10.30am to 11.30pm daily) and Calle Císter 8 (10.30am to 11.30pm daily).
Price: you buy turrón in a tablet and the price depends on the weight, but expect to pay from €16 for one packet.
Mantecados
Another favourite at Christmas in Spain, this sweetmeat is made of almonds, lard, flour and sugar. And like turrón, comes in all sorts of flavours. Choose from traditional, cinnamon, coconut, lemon, hazelnut…
La Antequerana is one of the best brands of mantecados in Andalusia and these are made in nearby Antequera. Conscious that lard isn’t the healthiest option, they’ve introduced mantecados made with olive oil or Iberian pig lard, both easier on the blood pressure.
Where to buy them: Atarazanas Market (9am-3pm Monday to Saturday) and at traditional grocery stores in the city centre.
Price: you buy mantecados by weight and prices start at around €7 a kilo.

Malaga wine
Choose from white, red and rosé, from one of the two official denominaciones de origen protegidas (DOP) in Malaga – Málaga and Sierras de Málaga. Look out for some fun labels, especially on wines produced in Ronda.
Try before you buy: if sweet wine is your thing, head for La Antigua Casa de Guardia on the Alameda Principal; if you’d like to try whites and/or reds, visit one of the wine-tasting venues in Malaga such as Anyway Wine Bar, Los Patios de Beatas and Vertical.

Malaga wine is up-and-coming on the international wine circuits and although Malaga is best known for its sweet wine, there are also some great white and reds. These include Botani produced by Grupo Jorge Ordóñez, a white wine bottled still, frizzante or sparkling – a great Malaga souvenir to toast in 2026 on New Year’s Eve.

Malaga beer
A bottle of local beer makes another unusual souvenir from Malaga. Several breweries make their own, including:
3 Monos – this brewery crafts several unusual types of beer and offers tours of their taprooms, with tastings at the end.
La Axarca – beer with a touch of the tropical fruits grown in the Axarquía, brewed in Frigiliana.
Trinidad – three types of beer, crafted in Alhaurín el Grande. Their brown ale is so chocolately you can drink with dessert!

Malaga olive oil
Known as liquid gold, olive oil from Malaga makes a great gift to anyone who enjoys cooking or wants to create a taste of breakfast in the city! Many shops in town stock local brands, often in funky bottles and handy sizes (330ml or 500ml).
Where to buy it: El Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience (9am to 9pm Monday, 10am-10pm Tuesday to Saturday), traditional grocery shops in the city centre and El Almacén del Indiano on Calle Cisneros (11.30am to 3pm Monday, 6 to 9pm Tuesday, noon to 3.30pm and 6.30 to 9.30pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 11.30am to 3.30pm and 6.30 to 10pm on Friday.

A handbag from Malaga
If hand-crafted leatherwork appeals, head for Labienhecha Store. Here, you’ll find a world of beautifully made handbags, purses and backpacks, made in the softest leather (100% vegan ‘leather’ also available) and in a great range of colours.
They used to make them in a small workshop in El Palo, but have since moved to bigger premises to cope with demand. You can also shop online.

Biznaga brooch or pendant
Practically identical to the real thing but without the powerful scent, these brooches imitate the delicate flower made of jasmine stamens to perfection. And it’s one of the symbols of Malaga, so it makes a perfect reminder of the city.
Where to buy it: Hago jewelers where all biznagas are handmade. Calle Santa Lucía 8 (Monday and Friday 10am to 9pm; Saturday 10am to 4pm).

Lusterware and ceramics
Malaga was one of the first places in the world to produce lusterware back in the time of the Moors. Your Christmas present budget probably doesn’t stretch to an original, but you can buy lovely ceramics at Alfajar. These handmade pieces definitely make an unusual Christmas gift from Malaga.

Picasso souvenir
It’s difficult to leave Malaga without something in your suitcase to remind you of Picasso. And there’s certainly plenty to choose from – Picassian motifs seem to appear on everything from ashtrays to clocks.

Malaga Christmas markets
You might also want to browse the festive market stalls for gift ideas. You’ll find them at the following locations:
Markets open daily from late November to 5 January.
Paseo del Parque – stalls are set up on the north side, almost along the entire stretch of the boulevard. They sell a range of artisan crafts (don’t miss the stalls selling miniatures for nativity scenes), bric-a-brac, knits, toys and accessories.
El Palmeral and Muelle Uno – two seasonal markets and great places to buy some of the best Christmas gifts from Malaga. Look for the stalls underneath the Pergola and in the central square next to the Pompidou Centre. They sell arts and crafts, accessories, clothes and sweets.
Weekly and one-off markets
El Zoco – stalls along the quayside in Muelle Uno on Sundays from 11am to 7pm.
Sabor a Málaga – the biggest annual meet of local produce and a must if you’re looking for Malaga Christmas food gifts. This year, the market takes place from 4 to 9 December, with stalls set up alongside the south side of the Paseo del Parque. Open 11am to 9pm.
Mercado Artesanal de La Merced – arts and crafts stalls set up in the Plaza de la Merced square on the two Sundays in December (7th and 28th in 2026).
Mercado del Soho – more arts and crafts stalls in Calle Tomas Heredia (off the Alameda Principal in the Soho district) on two Sundays in December (7th and 21st in 2026).

When to shop
- Christmas lights season (late November–early January) is the most atmospheric time.
- Shops open late and stay busy during the nightly light shows on Calle Larios.
- Shops are open on Sundays during December.
