La Mesonera Retrogusto
Traditional taverns don’t come much more authentic or delicious than La Mesonera Retrogusto. A classic on the local tapas scene, this friendly restaurant sits a stone’s throw from the Cervantes Theatre and Plaza de la Merced, making it an ideal option for a lunch or dinner in the city centre.
What’s on the menu at La Mesonera Retrogusto
Traditional Malaga recipes take centre stage, although touches of Cadiz cuisine in the tuna dishes share the limelight (more about those below). Expect staples such as croquettes, patatas bravas and Russian salad, but you’ll also find elevated dishes. This next level includes sea urchin caviar, Iberian pork skewer and croquettes with apple, blue cheese and walnuts.
As well as quick bites, you can also try fish and meat dishes. Here, we wheel back to that tuna, served braised in onion (encebollado), pickled (en escabeche) and in lard (en manteca), which is La Mesonera Retrogusto’s house special. If you fancy fried fish, the restaurant also crisps these to perfection, not easy to find in the city centre.
Vegetarians have a more limited choice, which includes Spanish omelette, asparagus and goat’s cheese.
All dishes are available as sharing plates, giving you the chance to try several options between you. Ask the friendly staff for recommendations.
The wallet-friendly prices are another pleasant surprise at La Mesonera Retrogusto. Expect to pay between €7 and €14 for a sharing plate, although tapas start at €2.50.

The Russian salad at La Mesonera Retrogusto ranks as one of the best in town along with the giant meatball in pepper sauce. The pork serranito is also finger-licking good and you won’t to miss their tuna.
