Retrogusto
Sometimes it’s worth leaving the city centre behind to enjoy dining that’s just as fine but with more wallet-friendly prices. Retrogusto is one such location, and this restaurant also makes a handy venue if you’re going to or returning from the Botanical Gardens.
Retrogusto has a Mediterranean-inspired menu, with prime grilled meats taking centre stage. It’s a restaurant where you can enjoy a full meal or savour some sharing plates as a lighter option. Service is efficient and friendly.
What’s on the menu at Retrogusto
Something for everyone is probably the best way to describe this menu, which has an excellent choice in all sections. Highlights in the quick bites/starters options include Russian salad, Malaga salchichón sausage tartar and artichokes with cured ham. Our particular favourite is the Cantabrian anchovy with cured cream cheese.
Moving on to main dishes, you’ll find plenty to choose from here too. Grilled meats, pork and beef, are stars of the show. All beef cuts come from La Finca in central Spain, a prime destination for sustainable farming based on animal wellbeing.
If fish is more your thing, don’t miss the red tuna belly, also one of the house specials.
Vegetarians can choose from several options, including salads, cheese and asparagus.
The excellent value and quality of the food is one of the main reasons for going to Retrogusto. Most dishes cost from €7 to €19, while grilled meat options are priced at between €18 to €24, with special cuts (e.g. ribeye and T-bone) cost €7 per 100g. Desserts cost a reasonable €6 each.
Add to this the friendly service and you can easily see why this restaurant is more than worth the trip.
Atmosphere
Retrogusto is light and airy, with modern touches in the design. If you’d rather be al fresco, the outside terrace makes a great place to sit. This restaurant also has a great local vibe – perfect for experiencing Malaga hospitality!
How to get to Retrogusto
This restaurant is in Ciudad JardÃn to the north of the old quarter. It’s around 50 minutes’ walk from the Alameda – just follow the river north and be sure to check out the stunning modern Red Cross building and the traditional façades of the houses as you walk up. Or you can talk the No 2 bus from the Alameda (allow around 25 minutes for your journey).
The restaurant is a 20-minute walk or 10-minute cycle ride from the Botanical Garden, making this an excellent option for a meal before or after your visit.
