Catalonia Puerta del Mar
Right at the heart of the old quarter, this relatively new hotel takes location, location, location to the next level. You almost couldn’t be nearer to attractions, restaurants and the airport bus and train than Catalonia Puerta del Mar.
It’s also an attractive historic building , with a stunningly elegant facade. All the Juliet balconies and wrought-iron features have been restored to their full former glory. Rooms are decorated in pleasingly minimalist style – this isn’t the hotel for you if you like frills – and visitors highlight the excellent service. All other solid reasons to stay here.
Best for: couples who want a central location
Location
This hotel sits in Puerta del Mar, next to the Alameda Principal and a stone’s throw from Calle Larios and Atarazanas Market. Malaga’s major must-sees such as the Picasso Museum and Alcazaba are around 10-minutes’ walk away, so if you’re looking for a central location, this accommodation gives that box a big tick.
Public transport to the Airport – bus stop and train station – are also just a few minutes’ walk.

The hotel sits in a pedestrian square, surrounded by other pedestrian streets, so you don’t walk out into traffic giving you a quieter start to your stay. Plus, Puerta del Mar is adjacent to key routes for Holy Week processions and the Carnival parades, putting you at the heart of the action.
Note that the hotel has excellent sound insulation, so you might be steps from a parade but you’d never know when you’re in your room.
Rooms
Minimalist is the watchword in the decor, with rooms kitted in neutral tones, wood accents and the odd splash of burgundy in the throws and cushions. The glamourous bit comes in the bathrooms, all with blue-marbled tiles, providing a stunning backdrop (see below).

Standard doubles are generously sized (25m2) – if you want more, go for a superior (29m2). There are also triples and family rooms. And if you want to splurge a little more, book yourselves the Junior Suite (below).

Note that the Catalonia Puerta del Mar is based in three separate buildings. This layout means you may have to take two lifts to get to your room. But we think this a small price to pay for staying in one of the most elegant facades in town!
Facilities
This hotel is a 4-star, so rooms come with a long list of features. The hotel also has a fitness room, pleasant bar area and room service with a good choice of snacks.

Parking isn’t available onsite, but the hotel has agreed a special rate with a nearby car park. Enquire when you book. Note that you can’t get to the hotel entrance by car because it’s a pedestrian street. If you have a lot of luggage or need assistance from your vehicle, let the reception staff know before you arrive.
